The result of a long-term strategy

This type of large and complex multi-trade project, in which LEONHARD WEISS acts as the general contractor and provides everything from a single source, is referred to internally as a "yellow site". This is where the construction company brings together all its strengths: 125 years of experience, expertise in various fields of activity, the power of modern machinery and the LW spirit, in which everyone supports each other and gives their best. That's why LEONHARD WEISS knows: when it's yellow, it's big – and really good.

VDEI 8.1 – the largest railway construction site in Germany

German Unity 8.1 transport project, Munich – Berlin railway line. Anyone driving on the A74 motorway north of Bamberg in 2016 and looking out of the window will see one thing above all else at first glance: yellow. Yellow excavators, yellow rollers, yellow reconstruction trains and other construction machines are working their way through the construction site, with yellow cranes towering above them. What you can't see is that behind the yellow hustle and bustle lies a sophisticated master plan and many coordinated trades and crews. But if you drive by again the next day, you will see the rapid progress being made on this section of Germany's largest railway construction site.

LEONHARD WEISS is realising various sections of the German Unity Transport Project 8.1. The existing double-track line between Hallstadt and Ebensfeld is to be upgraded to four tracks in the shortest possible time. In addition to the complete track infrastructure construction, the contract also includes all construction work. Among other things, 48,000 square meters of road will be built, 32 kilometers of track laid, six road overpasses and almost 10 kilometers of noise barriers constructed. The projects within VDEI 8.1 mark the beginning of a series of numerous other yellow construction sites that continue to contribute to the company's success today.

When 1 + 1 makes more than 2 – that was and is the core idea behind our yellow building sites. Other trades are seen as partners, teams and equipment are shared and the strengths of each area are utilised in such a way that the joint success is multiplied. This not only has a positive effect on the success of the project, but also on cooperation within the company. The result is an incredible understanding for one another.

The reconstruction of the Ahr valley railway – an infrastructure project that holds out hope

Another extraordinary yellow construction site: Reconstruction and modernisation work on the Ahrtal railway. LEONHARD WEISS has already acquired a high level of expertise in the clean-up and reconstruction work in Braunsbach (flood disaster in 2016). A flood of the century hits the Ahr valley in 2021. Flash floods and flooding cost the lives of at least 135 people along the Ahr and the tracks of the Ahr Valley Railway were also completely destroyed over a length of 16 kilometers on the night of the flood. Shortly after the disaster, several LEONHARD WEISS crews arrive to make a four-kilometer section of the line passable again.

In November 2021, shuttle service on one track will be possible again. Two years later, the reconstruction of the Ahr steel railway begins for the section between Walporzheim and Ahrbrück. The goal: the Ahr line is to be double-tracked and electrified by the end of 2025. This also includes many bridges and crossings that were destroyed in the night of the flood and are to be rebuilt to make them flood-proof. Extensive hydraulic engineering work is also required to restore the original course of the Ahr.
